SHS 132 - Introduction to Mental Health Technician
5.0 Credits Introduction to the mental health technician career path. Includes overview of the history and development of the mental health technician role within health care. Provides overview of behavioral, environmental, and other interventions to maintain milieu and patient well-being. Includes career paths, knowledge, and skills required for effective practice. Prerequisite SHS 114 and SHS 218. Corequisite SHS 218.
Course-level Learning Objectives (CLOs) Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Identify best practices for mental health technicians.
- Identify key interventions used when providing care to vulnerable populations.
- Analyze the range of practice, ethical expectations, and legal and licensing laws pertaining to the field.
- Describe the processes used to develop a person-centered relationship and person-centered service.
- Explore career opportunities and placements in a variety of settings including inpatient units, structured care homes,and other work sites.
- Develop skills in de-escalation, patient assessment, rehabiltative intervention, documentation, suicide intervention, and milieu treatment.
