DENTL 113 - Dental Materials/Lab Procedures I
2.0 Credits Introduces dental materials and techniques for laboratory, and clinical applications. Laboratory practice in tooth isolation techniques (rubber dam, matrix bands), tooth polishing, fluoride application, placement of topical anesthetics and desensitizing agents. Prerequisite DENTL 105 Course-level Learning Objectives (CLOs) Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Describe the vital role that a dental assistant plays in the preparation, use, manipulation, application, placement of dental materials in dentistry.
2. Identify intraoral landmarks to properly place topical anesthetic and desensitizing agents.
3. Apply infection control and safety practices when dealing with dental materials.
4. Demonstrate proper placement of rubber dams, matrix retainers, matrix bands, wedges and any other isolation materials used in dentistry.
5. Demonstrate the use of preventative materials such as sealants and fluoride in dentistry.
6. Demonstrate proficiency in the use of restorative dental materials related to their intended use: Composite Restorations; Provisional Restorations; Cements; Bases, Liners, and Bonding Agents.
7. Demonstrate proficiency in the use of impression materials intended to fabricate casts, and/or temporary crowns and/or bridges.
