ELA 84 - English for Work: Customer Service & Health
8.0 Credits English for Work: Customer Service & Health is a contextualized, high-beginning and low-intermediate ELA course with a focus on building skills for working in one of the existing and emerging in-demand industries in Snohomish County that also provide a pathway to existing certificates and degrees at Edmonds College: retail and healthcare. Students will build speaking, listening, reading, writing, and technology skills for these workplaces and work towards level-2 and level-3 outcomes. For students in levels 20-30. This class is aligned with the Career and College Readiness Standards (CCRS), as outlined in the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) of 2016. Placement by instructor or advisor. Course-level Learning Objectives (CLOs) Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate the ability to speak with level-appropriate fluency in person and on the phone in the targeted workplaces of customer service and healthcare.
- Create level-appropriate complete sentences and questions related to work.
- Apply reading strategies to learn about life and work culture in the U.S.
- Produce an academic paragraph and professional email.
- Use technology to assist with ELA, to navigate a learning management system, and apply computer application skills for workplace communication.
- Demonstrate the ability to use basic math operations vocabulary.
