FLED 132 - Parenting Education and Preschool Experience (36-48 months)
1.0-3.0 Credits Community based parenting education course for caregivers of children aged 36 to 48 months, combining lecture, discussion, and lab/practicum experience. Practicum focuses on developmentally appropriate practice within college affiliated preschools. Students gain confidence, develop resiliency, and utilize social connections to develop skills for positive adult-child interaction. Students engage in a process of self-reflection and self-assessment through class activities and instructor feedback. Course-level Learning Objectives (CLOs) Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Investigate the learning goals in a play based curriculum and support children’s learning through developmentally appropriate practice
- Observe and interpret adult-child interactions, and develop positive guidance strategies for use in the classroom and at home
- Identify and implement strategies for developing children’s independence and self-help skills
- Utilize emotion coaching strategies to impact a child’s social-emotional development, specifically with self management and social awareness
- Apply observation and reflection strategies to identify the motivation behind challenging behaviors
- Assess how developmental milestones impact executive functioning, learning, and relationship skills
