FLED 134 - Parenting Education and Preschool Experience (36-48 months)



1.0-3.0 Credits
Community based parenting education course for caregivers of children aged 36 to 48 months, combining lecture, discussion, and lab/practicum experience. Practicum focuses on developmentally appropriate practice within college affiliated preschools. Students gain confidence, develop resiliency, and utilize social connections to develop skills for positive adult-child interaction. Students engage in a process of self-reflection and self-assessment through class activities and instructor feedback.
Course-level Learning Objectives (CLOs)
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Investigate the learning goals in a play based curriculum and support children’s learning through developmentally appropriate practice
  2. Observe and interpret adult-child interactions, and develop positive guidance strategies for use in the classroom and at home
  3. Identify and implement strategies for developing children’s independence and self-help skills
  4. Utilize emotion coaching strategies to impact a child’s social-emotional development, specifically with self management and social awareness
  5. Apply observation and reflection strategies to identify the motivation behind challenging behaviors
  6. Assess how developmental milestones impact executive functioning, learning, and relationship skills
