FLED 142 - Parenting Education and Preschool Experience (48 months+)
1.0-3.0 Credits Community based parenting education course for caregivers of children aged 48 months and older, combining lecture, discussion, and lab/practicum experience. Practicum focuses on developmentally appropriate practice within college affiliated preschools. Students gain confidence, develop resiliency, and utilize social connections to develop skills for positive adult-child interaction. Students engage in a process of self-reflection and self-assessment through class activities and instructor feedback. Course-level Learning Objectives (CLOs) Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Explain the learning goals in a play based curriculum and support children’s growth in emergent academic skills through developmentally appropriate practice
- Identify the differences between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, understand how motivation affects behavior and recognize an individual’s specific motivation
- Apply observation and reflection strategies to identify the motivation behind challenging behaviors
- Describe and apply positive guidance strategies.
- Utilize emotion coaching strategies to impact a child’s social-emotional development, specifically with responsible decision making and relationship skills
- Interpret how developmental milestones impact executive functioning, learning, and relationship skills
