FLED 142 - Parenting Education and Preschool Experience (48 months+)

Community based parenting education course for caregivers of children aged 48 months and older, combining lecture, discussion, and lab/practicum experience. Practicum focuses on developmentally appropriate practice within college affiliated preschools. Students gain confidence, develop resiliency, and utilize social connections to develop skills for positive adult-child interaction. Students engage in a process of self-reflection and self-assessment through class activities and instructor feedback.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Explain the learning goals in a play based curriculum and support children’s growth in emergent academic skills through developmentally appropriate practice
Identify the differences between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, understand how motivation affects behavior and recognize an individual’s specific motivation
Apply observation and reflection strategies to identify the motivation behind challenging behaviors
Describe and apply positive guidance strategies.
Utilize emotion coaching strategies to impact a child’s social-emotional development, specifically with responsible decision making and relationship skills
Interpret how developmental milestones impact executive functioning, learning, and relationship skills
