ELA 85 - English for Work Communication: Manufacturing



8.0 Credits
English for Work Communication: MFG is a contextualized, high-beginning and low-intermediate ELA course with a focus on building skills for working in one of the existing and emerging in-demand industries in Snohomish County that also provide a pathway to existing certificates and degrees at Edmonds College: manufacturing and construction. Students will build speaking, listening, reading, writing, and technology skills for these workplaces and work towards level-2 and level-3 outcomes. For students in levels 20-30. This class is aligned with the Career and College Readiness Standards (CCRS), as outlined in the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) of 2016. Placement by instructor or advisor. S/U option.
Course-level Learning Objectives (CLOs)
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate the ability to speak with level-appropriate fluency in targeted workplaces of manufacturing and construction. 
  2. Create level-appropriate complete sentences and questions related to work.
  3. Apply reading strategies to learn about life and work culture in the U.S.
  4. Produce an academic paragraph.
  5. Use technology to assist with ELA, to communicate professionally through texting, to navigate a learning management system, and apply computer application skills for workplace communication.
  6. Demonstrate the ability to use basic math operations vocabulary and American measurements.
