HUM 250 - Ethics & Policy in Healthcare

Application and analysis of values, ethics, legal decision-making frameworks, and policies that support the health and well-being of individuals, families, populations, and healthcare professionals.
Prerequisite Admission to the RN program is required to take this course. 
Course-level Learning Objectives (CLOs)
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Examine collaboration patterns and identify barriers to effective communication within healthcare systems.
  2. Investigate the cultural and social factors influencing communication with diverse patients, families, and communities.
  3. Evaluate the impact of public policy on patient care and the ethical dilemmas associated with clinical decision-making.
  4. Discuss the legal and ethical considerations related to research to establish evidence-based practices that ensure safe, high-quality care.
  5. Analyze how laws and facility policies impact patient care while recognizing the ethical conflicts that arise from health disparities.
  6. Identify strategies for nurses to advocate effectively for culturally diverse patients, families, and communities.
