SOC 250 - Psychosocial Issues in Healthcare
5.0 Credits Examination of mental health through a sociological lens, emphasizing how social, psychological, environmental, spiritual, and cultural dimensions interact across the lifespan within the framework of our healthcare system. Prerequisite Admission to the RN program is required to take this course. Course-level Learning Objectives (CLOs) Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Apply principles of teamwork and collaboration to advocate and plan care for patients with mental health concerns across health systems.
- Discuss trauma-informed care and communication strategies for patients affected by social determinants of health (SDOH) and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs).
- Utilize clinical judgment to evaluate coping mechanisms and plan person-centered care for patients and families experiencing mental health disorders.
- Develop care plans to ensure the safety of patients experiencing mental health concerns, their families, and their caregivers.
- Utilize evidence-based resources and communication techniques to develop strategies and guidelines that promote safe nursing care across health systems.
- Discuss legal and ethical principles relevant to mental health for individuals, families, and communities.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the implications of health disparities affecting vulnerable populations and their access to mental health services.
