Family Support Studies - Parent Education and Family Support Certificate

Program Description The Parent Education and Family Support Certificate provides students with certification upon completing select core courses in the Family Support Program. This certificate is designed to develop skills for supporting, educating, and mentoring parents and families in schools, parent education programs, and human service settings. It is primarily intended for individuals who already hold an associate’s degree or higher, with prior coursework in child development. This program is ideal for those seeking to enhance their competencies in working with parents and families. To earn the certificate, students must successfully complete a minimum of 37 credits as specified.

Advising Note This program requirement sheet is not a substitute for meeting with an academic advisor. Meeting the requirements to graduate with an Edmonds College certificate or degree is ultimately the responsibility of the student.

Program Requirements (37 credits)


OUTCOMES:

  1. Apply and demonstrate best practices in supporting families in human services, educational, or prevention program settings.
  2. Demonstrate ability to effectively work with individuals and families using communication and conflict resolution skills, group interaction, problem solving, and ethical procedures.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of community resources that are respectful, responsive, and culturally appropriate to meet the needs of today’s diverse families.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of evidence based parent education programs and services for families with children from early childhood through adolescence.

Program Notes


The program code for this certificate is YSAPFC20. For financial aid, advising, and other reasons, students should work with their advisor to ensure that this code is properly recorded on their academic record.

  • This certification is an abbreviated certificate awarded upon completion of some of the core courses in the Family Support Program. The courses can be applied to Family Support Studies or Social and Human Services ATA or AAS-T degrees. See a faculty advisor for program details.
  • The Career and College Success course should be completed within the first two quarters. Students who transfer in 30 or more college-level credits with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher may be exempt from the Career and College Success course; see faculty advisor.

  • Not all courses are offered every quarter. Some elective courses are offered only once a year. Students are strongly urged to consult with their faculty advisor regarding their career objectives, interests, and schedule planning.

Certificate General Information (20-44 credits)


Credit/Grade Requirements 

A minimum of 30 credits or one-third of the required college-level (100-level or above) credits, whichever is less, must be earned at Edmonds College. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all college-level courses.

Program of Study Outcomes 

Student achievement is assessed in the general and program specific outcomes via the courses and course objectives that align with those outcomes. More information about program outcomes and course objectives can be found on the Using Program Requirement Sheets  page.

Students Are Advised To

  • Review how to apply for certain exams to be awarded as credit.
  • Plan their schedule several quarters in advance in order to accommodate courses that are offered only once or twice a year;
  • Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning; and
  • Communicate with an academic advisor and/or a faculty advisor.

Graduation Application 

It is the student’s responsibility to apply for graduation. Your degree or certificate will not be awarded unless you submit a graduation application. A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted online by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Note: Applications for summer quarter are due by the 8th day of the quarter.
