Computer Science - Data Analytics For Professionals Certificate of Completion

Program Description The Data Analytics Certificate Program for Professionals is intended for those working in the Data Analytics field but seeking to improve their skills in different sub-domains of analytics. The objective of this program is to review and build on the fundamentals of data analysis, including advanced techniques in data processing, statistical methods, machine learning, synthesis of analysis and modeling, and storytelling. This program offers electives so that  students can gain specialized knowledge in the domain of their choice. This Certificate of Completion requires successful completion of 19 credits as outlined.

Program Requirements (19 credits)


OUTCOMES:

Upon completion of this program students will be able to:

  • Use advanced features of database query languages and higher level programming languages (such as SQL and Python or R) to ingest, clean and process data for analysis including describing and summarizing datasets, identifying relationships across variables and trends.
  • Evaluate business domains to which data analytics can be applied, translate business questions into data questions, and formulate analysis plans.
  • Examine and apply advanced statistical concepts for data analysis, including hypothesis development, sampling and estimation methods, probability, correlation, interpreting data distributions, central tendency, and bias versus variance.
  • Compare and apply supervised machine learning models (such as classification models vs. regression models) using popular modeling techniques, including linear regression, decision trees, random forests. 
  • Compare and apply unsupervised machine learning models using modeling and analysis techniques such as clustering, dimensionality reduction, and association.
  • Demonstrate communication techniques to influence business stakeholders, including authoring presentations to a leadership audience and writing technical papers to convey research and analytics findings.
  • Complete a capstone project based on a business case study (analysis plan, dataset cleaning, data preparation, modeling/analysis, preparing a short paper or brief, delivering presentation)

CS 299 is a variable credit course. This certificate requires 4 credits of CS 299.

Certificate of Completion General Information


This certificate of completion (COC) is awarded upon completion of the required number of courses. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or S grades in all college level courses in order to earn this COC. Certain certificates may require a higher cumulative grade point average as dictated by industry standards. All credits for this COC must be earned at Edmonds College.

Certificates of completion (COCs) are not eligible for financial aid; however, some COCs may be eligible for veteran’s benefits. If you are interested in this COC, please talk to your faculty advisor or an academic advisor in student services.

Student achievement is assessed in the general and program specific outcomes via the courses and course objectives that align with those outcomes. More information about program outcomes and course objectives can be found on the Using Program Requirement Sheets page.

Students Are Advised To:

  • Plan their schedule several quarters in advance in order to accommodate courses that are offered only once or twice a year;
  • Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning; and
  • Communicate with an academic advisor and/or a faculty advisor.

Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted online by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Note: Applications for summer quarter are due by the 8th day of the quarter.
