Family Support Studies - Associate in Applied Science-T Degree Program Map

This program map is a scheduling tool designed to show you how you can meet the Associate in Applied Science-Transfer requirements while also focusing on coursework for your area of focus. You should meet with an advisor to help create your custom plan.

Degree Notes

Academic pathways: AAS-T programs are designed to prepare graduates for jobs requiring two years of training and for bachelor’s programs that accept AAS-T degrees. This AAS-T is designed for transfer to colleges having specific bachelor’s degree programs accepting the AAS-T degree. 

Career pathways: Family Support Studies coursework provides training and instruction in best practices in family support to students currently working or planning to work with people using a strengths-based approach within a framework of prevention. The approach nurtures healthy development of families through the processes of accentuating family strengths, connection to positive community resources and nurturing self-efficacy and agency for family members. Students develop skills in communications, education of parents, and working with systems to support family growth and development. Possible career opportunities can include family support workers, community workers, parent mentor, parent advocate, parent educator, family support coordinator, social worker, case manager, guardian ad litem, therapist.

Modality: This program map is designed to allow you to complete your program fully online with some courses requiring Online Synchronous meetings. 

Order of Courses: The courses are ordered in a suggested course sequence. Many courses can be taken at different times; however, some may require completion or concurrent enrollment in prerequisite courses. Please refer to your custom plan and speak to your advisor to discuss rearranging the order of your courses.

Time to Complete: The Family Support Studies AAST requires the completion of 90 college-level credits. Full-time students typically take 15 credits per quarter and may complete the certificate in six quarters; Part-time students, students who need to complete pre-college level courses, prerequisites, or students who take time off may take longer to satisfy all certificate requirements.

  • Starting Term: These maps are designed to start in the Fall and may have Summer terms (indicated by “Term S - Summer”). Students starting in terms other than Fall should talk to an advisor.
  • Course Sequence: Courses are listed in a specific order to satisfy program requirements. Do not swap classes unless directed to by an advisor. Some courses may have limited offerings during the year. Work with an advisor to create a custom plan if needed.
  • Time to Complete: You may complete your program earlier or later depending on transferred credits, how many classes you take per term, and any prerequisite or pre-college courses you need.
  • Transfer Requirements: This degree is designed to transfer into the BAS degree in Child Youth and Family Studies at Edmonds College or related BAS degrees at other colleges. 
  • Reading this map: “Choose One” sections provide course options that could work for your degree regardless of what you choose. When you see “Discuss With Advisor,” you should work with your advisor to select these courses to help you meet graduation requirements as well as university admission or major requirements.

Getting Started - Placement Notes


Milestone 1: NSA (New Student Advising)
*Meet with your advisor to select a program of study, obtain math and English placement, plan pre-college coursework, discuss transfer credits, and obtain a starting plan.

  • Placement for Math is not required to begin this program. MATH& 107 placement  is required before starting certain classes.
  • Placement into ENGL& 101 is recommended before beginning this program, and is required in order to follow this program map sequence.
     

Term 1 - Fall (15 credits)


Term 2 - Winter (15 credits)


Milestone 2: Term 2 Check-In
*Meet with your advisor to make sure you are making steady progress and have successfully taken or planned to take entry level classes for your program. Create a full academic plan with your advisor for your remaining requirements.

Term S - Summer (16 credits)


*This course can be taken in a summer quarter any time during the degree program or added to any quarter during the academic year (as available).

Term 4 - Fall (16 credits)


Milestone 3: Degree Progress Check-in
*Meet with your advisor for a progress check and to finalize remaining courses for your program. Begin discussing and planning for your post-graduation goals.

Term 5 - Winter (13 credits)


Milestone 4: Graduation Application
*Submit a graduation application prior to your final term.
