International Business - Associate of Technical Arts Degree

The basic objective of this degree is to prepare students for management or supervisory positions in business and government that require familiarity with activities such as trade, finance, and technological exchanges across national borders. This degree addresses some of the business complications and opportunities that can result from national differences in economic, political, cultural and demographic environments.

Credit/Grade Requirements This ATA degree is awarded upon a student’s completion of a minimum of 90 credits of General Requirements, Business/Management Requirements, International Business Requirements, and Electives as outlined below. A minimum of 30 credits or one-third, whichever is less, of the required credits must have been received from Edmonds Community College. The student must have a minimum grade point average of 2.5.

Cultural Diversity Requirement All students earning degrees and certificates of 45 credits or more must meet a cultural diversity (CD) requirement by completing courses marked as “CD” on the requirement sheet and/or “Meets Cultural Diversity Requirement” in the quarterly class schedule. Those courses may also be used to fulfill other requirements of the degree or certificate.

Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted to Enrollment Services by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Forms are available online or at Enrollment Services located in Lynnwood Hall.

Students are advised to:

  • Plan their schedule several quarters in advance in order to accommodate courses that are offered only one or twice a year,
  • Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning,
  • Check plans with the appropriate faculty adviser, and
  • Request written approval for modifications of the approved curriculum from the registration office on a Petition for Waiver form.

Foreign Language Requirement (0-15 credits)


All candidates for this degree must develop the ability to communicate in at least two languages.

  1. Candidates whose native language is English must either:
    1. complete a first-year, college-level foreign language series; or,
    2. demonstrate a minimum foreign language speaking, reading, and writing ability to the International Business Program adviser. This may include being interviewed by a language consultant of the adviser’s choice.
  2. Candidates whose native language is not English may utilize up to 15 credits of college-level EAP (English for Academic Purposes) courses.

IV. Electives


 Select electives in consultation with adviser to complete 90 credits.

Degree Outcomes


Students completing this degree will be able to:

  • Write and speak in a clear, logically organized manner.
  • Have a working knowledge of at least a second language.
  • Apply, analyze, synthesize and evaluate information.
  • Use appropriate technology and technical skills to manage information and solve problems.
  • Demonstrate the mathematical skills essential to employment.
  • Demonstrate the ability to research employment opportunities, prepare an effective employment package, and present themselves positively in a job interview.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and appreciation of how political, economic and cultural factors influence the business environment.
  • Create an environment conducive to positive group interaction.
