Computer Information Systems - Associate of Technical Arts Degree

See program requirement sheet.

Our broad-based curriculum produces skilled people who can move into a wide range of high-tech Information Technology careers. Our base curriculum includes: in-depth use of MS Office Professional, software support, hardware support, database theory and design, programming using Visual Basic, web development, networking and a two-course sequence in systems analysis and design.

Entry Requirements Students entering Computer Information Systems (CIS) programs will need to contact Enrollment Services and take both the English and Math placement tests. Students should bring the results of these tests to their first advising appointment with a CIS adviser for proper placement into the program. In addition, some CIS certificates and degrees begin at an advanced level and are designed for students already in the IT field. Students entering these programs may complete a portfolio of prior learning by taking CIS 116 . The portfolio will be used to waive entry-level courses and place students in the appropriate advanced courses. Please see a CIS adviser for more information.

The prerequisite for the required math course, CIS 114  Math and Problem Solving, is placement into MATH 080 . Students with ACCUPLACER scores below the required level should take the appropriate math prerequisites and plan their schedule accordingly.

Credit/Grade Requirements This ATA degree is awarded upon completing a minimum of 91 credits of Program Requirements and Electives as outlined. A minimum of 30 credits or one-third, whichever is less, of the required credits must have been received from Edmonds Community College. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all college-level courses as well as a minimum grade point average of 2.8 within the program requirements.

Career Management Requirement Students obtaining ATA degrees are required to take at least 1 credit of career management, which can be satisfied by taking either CIS 116  or CIS 280 .

Cultural Diversity Requirement All students earning degrees and certificates of 45 credits or more must meet a cultural diversity (CD) requirement by completing courses marked as “CD” on the requirement sheet and/or “Meets Cultural Diversity Requirement” in the quarterly class schedule. Those courses may also be used to fulfill other requirements of the degree or certificate.

Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted to Enrollment Services by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Forms are available online or at Enrollment Services located in Lynnwood Hall.

CWU Transfer This ATA degree transfers directly to Central Washington University’s Bachelors in Information Technology and Administrative Management on the Edmonds Community College campus. Students must complete specific requirements for English, math, and logic. For more information, visit CWU BAS-ITAM or contact the CWU adviser at linklett@cwu.edu.

Students are advised to:

  • plan their schedule several quarters in advance in order to accommodate courses that are offered only once or twice a year,
  • review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning,
  • check plans with the appropriate faculty adviser, and
  • see the CIS website to determine when courses are generally offered.
