Social and Human Services - Human Services Associate of Applied Science-T Degree

This program provides the foundation, knowledge and skills for effective work with individuals and families experiencing a variety of life issues. The focus of this degree is to equip students to successfully compete for entry level positions assisting and empowering consumers served by a variety of human services programs.

This Associate in Applied Science-T (AAS-T) in Human Services is a 107 credit professional technical degree with a core of general education courses commonly accepted in transfer. In general, professional-technical degrees are not designed for transfer to other colleges or universities. This degree will articulate to the Bachelor of Applied Science in Applied Behavioral Sciences at Seattle Central Community College.

Students seeking to transfer to degree programs other than those specifically designed for the AAS-T should consider the Associate of Arts  or the Associate of Science degree, which are specifically designed for transfer to four-year colleges and universities.

Credit/Grade Requirements This AAS-T degree requires successful completion of a minimum of 107 credits as outlined. A minimum of 30 credits or one-third of the required credits, whichever is less, must be earned at Edmonds Community College. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all college-level courses.

Cultural Diversity Requirement All students earning degrees and certificates of 45 credits or more must meet a cultural diversity (CD) requirement by completing courses marked as “CD” on the requirement sheet and/or “Meets Cultural Diversity Requirement” in the quarterly class schedule. Those courses may also be used to fulfill other requirements of the degree or certificate.

Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted to Enrollment Services by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Forms are available online or at Enrollment Services located in Lynnwood Hall.

Students are advised to:

  • Consult with an SHS faculty adviser quarterly for course selection and completion of degree requirements and plan their schedule several quarters in advance (Note: all decisions on selection of courses are ultimately the responsibility of the student),
  • Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning, and
  • All students who intend to transfer should meet with an adviser of the college they plan to transfer to review exact and specific admission requirements.

Degree Outcomes


Students completing this degree will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of human development over the lifespan; its application to services and activities that might be provided to diverse consumer populations.
  • Demonstrate necessary skills for ethical and positive work with consumers, such as communication, group interaction, problem solving, and crisis management techniques.
  • Gather, assemble, and interpret data to determine consumers’ strengths and barriers impacting their ability to overcome adversity or achieve valued life goals.
  • Identify and evaluate evidence-based practice methods, including principles, strategies and techniques that can be used to assist consumers in reaching their service goals.
  • Help consumers locate, access, develop and make use of supportive and helpful resources and opportunities in their social environment.
  • Apply knowledge of key issues in an area of specialization in order to work in a range of community settings with a variety of consumer populations.
