Edmonds College Student Rights, Freedoms, and Responsibilities
Student Civility Code
The Edmonds College Student Civility Code emphasizes treating everyone with honesty, respect, and courtesy, fostering a learning environment free from discrimination and harassment, and upholding academic integrity by being responsible citizens who respect others’ rights, properties, and educational goals. This means students must engage civilly and avoid disruptive behavior, ensuring freedom of expression doesn’t infringe on others’ dignity. Edmonds College students are expected to treat staff, faculty, fellow students and community members with civility and respect, recognizing that disagreement and informed debate are valued in an academic community. Demeaning, intimidating, threatening, bullying, or violent behaviors that interfere with learning, work, or campus life violate the college’s standards of civility and respect.
Students are expected to treat all members of the college community with honesty, respect and courtesy; each individual shall have regard for the dignity and needs of the people with whom they interact. This standard of conduct applies to all interpersonal interactions, written and verbal communications, in cyberspace and on social media networks. The college is committed to fostering respectful and civil behavior from all students, whether in the classroom, online, and both on and off campus.
The following civility ideals serve as a guide for appropriate behavior in the classroom and all other campus locations:

Respect the work and property of others;

Promote the free expression of views without degrading or harming others;

Respect differing points of view;

Engage in courteous discourse - verbal and non-verbal, electronic and written;

Exhibit the values of academic and professional integrity: honesty, trust, fairness, respect, and responsibility; and
-
Encourage others to abide by the tenets of civility.
Examples of behaviors that violate this Civility Code, which may also constitute harassment, discrimination, or other violations of college policy, include, but are not limited to:

Screaming or yelling

Sarcasm with an apparent intent to humiliate

Words or actions that intimidate, degrade, demean, or threaten others; especially when based on a person’s protected status, such as race, color, creed, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, disability, or age

Retaliatory actions against any individual who reports an alleged violation of this code or any other college policy, or who participates in an investigation

Email or social media comments or behaviors that publicly or privately degrade, intimidate, or humiliate members of the college community

Failure to comply with directives from instructors or campus officials while being disrespectful and/or confrontational.
Violations of this Civility Code may be referred to the Vice President for Enrollment and Student Services (or designee) for review and resolution, and may lead to formal disciplinary action under the Edmonds College Student Code of Conduct (WAC 132Y-125-001). This civility code is not a substitute for the Edmonds College Student Code of Conduct .
Additionally, visitors, and the families of college members are required to display appropriate conduct at all times. Noncompliant behavior may lead to removal from the campus.
Violations of the Student Civility Code and/or Student Code of Conduct can be reported through reporting forms.
